Uploader commentLegenda ripada do DVD brasileiro (Subpack). Sinopse: Primeira parte de uma história que se passa na zona rural francesa nos anos 1920. Ugolin e seu padrinho Cezar são os últimos da imponente família Soubeyran. Ugolin tem apenas uma ambição na vida: criar cravos, e para isso, precisa de um bom terreno com bastante água, raro na região. Os Soubeyran propõem a Pique-Bouffige, dono de uma nascente abandonada, vender-lhes a terra, mas este se recusa e sofre um acidente mortal durante a briga que se sucede. O herdeiro é seu sobrinho, Jean de Florette, que se muda para a fazenda. Os Soubeyran, conhecendo a localização da nascente, bloqueiam-na para que Jean não possa usá-la e forçá-lo a lhes vender a terra por um preço menor. They need its spring water for growing their flowers, so are dismayed to hear the man who has inherited it is moving in. They block up the spring and watch as their new neighbour tries to keep his crops watered from wells far afield through the hot summer. Though they see his desperate efforts are breaking his health and his wife and daughter's hearts they think only of getting the water
