גוסטב פון אשנבאך הוא מוסיקאי ידוע ונערץ בארצו, שתחושת הריקנות המקננת בו מאלצת אותו לצאת לחופשה. הוא יוצא לוונציה, ושם מתכנן לבוא חשבון עם בדידותו ועם חייו. אולם מראהו של נער יפה תואר משבש את כוונותיו. הגבר העייף והנוגה הולך שבי אחרי יופיו של הנער, מאריך את שהותו ומתעלם מאותות האזהרה של העיר הנגועה במגפת טיפוס מסתורית. יצירתו האלמותית של תומס מאן, שעלילתה מתרחשת בסוף המאה התשע עשרה, זוכה כאן לעיבוד מבריק שכולו אווירה והקפדה על תפאורה מדהימה ועתירה בפרטים תקופתיים. מגפת הטיפוס מומחשת בצורת ערפל חיוור הנח על מרצפות העיר; מצבי רוחו של גוסטב מקבלים ביטוי באמצעות המוסיקה הקודרת של מאהלר, והסיום הוא מערבולת סוחפת של מופת קולנועי.
